SPANA was established in 1923 and is one of the oldest international animal welfare charities. Our work takes us to some of the world's poorest communities in North and West Africa and the Middle East. In many of the poorest countries, qualified vets are scarce. Where they do exist, even the smallest of fees will put their services beyond the means of most impoverished animal owners. This can have grave consequences when a whole family relies on a horse or donkey for survival. So, animals continue to suffer unnecessarily and poverty-stricken families become poorer still.
